Mobily continues network expansion

4 Dec 2006

Saudi Arabia’s second cellular operator Mobily has begun phase three of its GSM/GPRS network expansion, under which it aims to reach 90% geographical coverage by year-end. The firm, which is owned by Etisalat of the UAE, has already rolled out 2.5G networks covering all major cities, towns and villages and the Kingdom’s main highways. CellularNews reports that it is now working with four equipment vendors – Ericsson, Alcatel, Motorola and Huawei – to expand the system to additional villages and roads, while existing networks are also having capacity boosted. Mobily had 4.8 million subscribers at the end of September 2006.
