DoT rejects TRAI’s MNP recommendation

4 Dec 2006

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has rejected the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) recommendation that mobile number portability (MNP) be implemented in a phased manner from 1 April, 2007. The DoT stated that the decision of when to introduce MNP should be left to the commercial judgement of the operators themselves due to the costs involved. It also said that the absence of dual-mode handsets means that MNP will not work anyway across technologies like GSM and CDMA.
