Officials bitch about Switch

28 Nov 2006

Telecom Namibia launched a new CDMA-based WiLL service under the brand name Switch last week, but it has received a frosty reception from telecoms regulator, the NCC, which says it wants the service classified as a ‘mobile’ product. Switch uses SIM card-enabled handsets and provides post- and pre-paid fixed line subscribers with access to a range of features previously only available to cellular users, including audio streaming, games, SMS, MMS, bank transactions and e-mail. The NCC licensed Telecom Namibia to use CDMA frequencies in February 2005, but was quoted at the weekend in local press as saying that Switch is illegal as its operational scope falls outside that of a fixed line service.
