MegaFon given interconnect fee deadline

24 Nov 2006

Russian mobile operator MegaFon has been given until tomorrow to lower its interconnect tariffs to bring them into line with those of its rivals or face legal charges. Earlier this year the country’s big three cellcos – MTS, Vimpelcom and MegaFon – lowered interconnect fees for calls between their respective networks to RUB0.95, but failed to include smaller operators in the deal. The smaller players complained to regulators that they were still paying RUB1.10 and a threat of intervention from the Federal Antimonopoly Service saw MTS and Vimpelcom introduce the lower fees across the board. MegaFon has so far refused to back down.
