Libercell launches GPRS/EDGE network

21 Nov 2006

Liberia’s smallest mobile operator by subscribers, Atlantic Wireless Liberia (Libercell), will today launch its GPRS/EDGE network, enabling its subscribers to have full access to wireless internet via a mobile phone or PC. The operator is also launching a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), giving users access to up-to-date local and international news, and daily news bulletins.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Libercell was established in 1999 by Atlantic Wireless International as an analogue mobile phone operator. It received a licence to operate a digital GSM network in 2003 and rolled out commercial services in January 2005 in Kakata, Monrovia and Tubmanburg, having contracted Nortel Networks to deploy equipment. It expanded its reach to Maryland County in August, and in October launched in Grand Cape Mount, Voinjama and Lofa Counties.
