Kenya signs Etisalat for cable deal

21 Nov 2006

The Kenyan government is going ahead with the deployment of its own undersea cable link to the Middle East and is not waiting for an agreement to be reached on the future of the East African Submarine System (EASSy). State-owned Telkom Kenya has contracted Etisalat of the UAE to lay, operate and maintain a KES7.9 billion (USD110 million) link between Mombasa and Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman. Local newspaper the East African Standard reports that the cable is expected to enter service in around twelve months time and should lead to higher quality and lower cost broadband connections for Kenyan businesses.
