H3G may not launch 3.5G in Sydney in time for Christmas, papers say

20 Nov 2006

Hutchison 3G Australia (H3G) is on target to launch HSDPA services in Brisbane in time for Christmas, but users in Sydney hoping to make use of 3.5G services this year are likely to be disappointed, according to Australian IT. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, H3G initially planned to upgrade parts of its network with HSDPA technology for the commercial launch of services in early 2007. However, with both Telstra and Vodafone launching their own HSDPA upgrades in October 2006, it fast tracked plans to rollout services in Sydney and Brisbane by Christmas. However, the cellco has only been able to confirm that it will make the Brisbane launch date. When asked about its plans to roll out HSDPA services in Sydney, an H3G spokesperson told the site: ‘We’re still building out that network. If it reaches a stage where we feel we would like to launch that at Christmas we may do so but that decision has not been taken.’
