Bouygues tests NFC technology to turn mobile phones into train tickets

20 Nov 2006

French mobile operator Bouygues Télécom is testing a travel card integrated into a mobile phone in a trial area covering the Paris mass transit authority (RATP) network and the surrounding Transilien SNCF suburban transit system. The pilot is using so-called ‘contactless’ mobile technology which is expected to become widespread in the future. Bouygues is collaborating with Gemalto for the SIM cards, NEC for the handsets and Paris-based Inside Contactless for the Near Field Communication (NFC) equipment components needed for the trial. Bouygues and the RATP have already completed an initial series of tests to validate the technical aspects of the technology and are now embarking on the second phase, which will involve some 100 customers over a three-month period.
