Biggest mobile market in Africa by 2008

17 Nov 2006

The research group Informa Telecoms has predicted that Nigeria will overtake South Africa as the continent’s largest cellular market by the end of next year. Subscriptions are expected to reach 44 million in Nigeria in the next twelve months, compared to 40 million in South Africa. With 130 million people, Nigeria is the most populated in Africa, and despite quadrupling in the last two years, mobile penetration was still only at 19% in September 2006, suggesting plenty of room for growth, while South Africa’s market is relatively saturated with over seven in ten people having phones at the same date.
