DoCoMo to trim network spend in coming fiscal year

16 Nov 2006

Japan’s leading mobile operator by subscribers NTT DoCoMo plans to cut its capital expenditure on network upgrades in its next fiscal year, though it aims to deliver major increases in speed and capacity for 2010-2015, according to Kouta Kinoshita, president of key technical subsidiary DoCoMo Technology. Kinoshita said the wireless operator had upped its capex this year to prepare for mobile number portability, which came into effect last month, but would decrease it again in fiscal 2007 to less than JPY800 billion (USD6.8 billion). DoCoMo will then take a considered approach to increasing the speed and capacity of its networks in Japan, and plans to complete the upgrade of its ‘Super 3G’ network by 2010, with the introduction of so-called ‘4G’ to follow by 2015.
