Qualcomm Japan faces investigation from the fair trade commission

13 Nov 2006

According to a statement from Qualcomm, its Japanese unit is facing a possible investigation from the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) concerning its licensing and chip business practices in the country. The US vendor says no date has been given for the inquiry and no one has made the company aware of the nature of the possible complaint about it. It plans to cooperate fully with the Japanese authorities to prove its case that its actions are lawful and designed to foster competition in the market, and not hamper it. ‘Our business model of extensively licensing our technology has opened the 3G market to new players – driving competition, growth and innovation – and we have consistently offered the best, most advanced chipsets and software at competitive prices,’ said Steve Altman, Qualcomm president.
