Mobilcom on the prowl for takeover target

10 Nov 2006

Number two German mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Mobilcom, which owns 50.43% of ISP, is said to be sizing up fixed line and broadband operators as potential acquisition targets. Chief Executive Eckhard Spoerr said that Mobilcom had EUR520 million (USD664.6 million) in cash for a purchase, but did not name any specific quarry. According to industry insiders, ISP Tiscali Germany is on the list. Spoerr did confirm that Drillisch, the MVNO that owns 10.37% of Mobilcom and wants to form an alliance of MVNOs to rival the main cellular players (see CommsUpdate 24 October 2006), was not on the scope as its customer base is largely pre-paid, and therefore is of no strategic value to Mobilcom.
