MTNL hands out broadband and GSM expansion contracts

9 Nov 2006

State-owned telco Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), which offers fixed and mobile services in Mumbai and Delhi, has contracted Huawei Technologies, ITI-Alcatel and Motorola to expand its broadband and mobile networks under three separate deals. Huawei was handed an INR2 billion (USD44.8 million) contract to roll out 500,000 new broadband lines in Delhi, whilst local vendor ITI-Alcatel will deploy the same number in Mumbai. The deal with Huawei caught many by surprise, following a recent furore in India over the alleged security risks of dealing with Chinese companies. Motorola, meanwhile, is to expand MTNL’s GSM network by two million lines.
