ComReg seeks input on FWALA and WDMDS licensing schemes

9 Nov 2006

The Irish telecoms regulator, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), is asking interested parties to submit proposals to modify the existing Fixed Wireless Access Local Area (FWALA) and Wideband Digital Mobile Data Services (WDMDS) licensing schemes, writes ENN. The watchdog estimates that by the end of June this year around 52,500 people were signed up to broadband services using some form of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) platform, a massive 192% rise on the previous year. With growth rates continuing to accelerate, ComReg is keen to foster competition in the sector which is currently home to eleven different operators, which between them hold over 160 FWALA licences.
