French mobile subscribers close in on 50 million-mark

According to the latest data published by the French telecoms regulator Arcep, France was home to 49.82 million mobile phone subscribers at the end of September 2006, a cellular penetration of 82.6%, up from 49.08 million and 81.4% respectively at the end of June. The watchdog said that the figure was split between network operators and MVNOs which controlled 47.05 million and 953,900 subscribers respectively at that date, giving MVNOs a market share of 1.99%, up from 1.46% in June. In addition, the proportion of pre-paid accounts dipped by more than 80,000 to 17.3 million, while contract users climbed by more than 800,000 to 32.5 million. The number of mobile multimedia users in mainland France stood at a little over 13.2 million by end-September – down marginally from the figure reported in June.
