Digitel Mobile Philippines, the Gokongwei-owned wireless operator which offers services under the brand name Sun Cellular, has announced plans to invest PHP6.3 billion (USD127.2 million) on its new nationwide 3G network ahead of a commercial launch next year. The cash injection will support the company’s three-year rollout plan, 86% of which will be funded via loans, with the remainder coming from an equity infusion. According to documents filed with the Filipino Board of Investments, Digitel Mobile applied for ‘pioneer status’ with the board as its project cost exceeded the minimum PHP420-million requirement. The government, however, refused to award the cellco an income tax holiday, saying its proposed 3G service was already seen as ‘profitable’.
