Germany’s EU regulatory dispute escalates

1 Nov 2006

Bernd Pfaffenbach, Permanent Secretary at the German Trade and Industry Ministry, has rejected the demands of the EU Commissioner, Viviane Reding, that regulatory decisions should be centralised, reports Handelsblatt. Pfaffenbach stated that centralisation was not compatible with his government’s telecoms policy but did not rule out the possibility of a compromise. As previously reported on CommsUpdate, the EU has threatened Germany with legal action if it legislates in favour of incumbent Deutsche Telekom by allowing it sole control of the VDSL network it has built.
