NT to increase internet bandwidth to 155Mbps

30 Oct 2006

According to reports in the Nepal News, the country’s incumbent fixed line operator Nepal Telecom (NT) plans to increase its internet bandwidth to 155Mbps and then sell on capacity on the link to other local ISPs. NT is looking to secure a fibre-optic link with Mumbai, India and then on to the US via submarine cable systems, with Somnath Bhattarai, manager of computer department at NT, saying talks with Indian and American officials concerning the plans were under way. Interested ISPs will be sold capacity on the link at a ‘concessional’ rate, reducing their reliance on more costly VSAT alternatives.
