Indian mobile operator Aircel, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Maxis Communications, has launched WiMAX services in Chennai and is rolling out wireless broadband networks in Bangalore, the company said in a statement. Earlier this month Aircel switched on its 802.16d WiMAX network in Chennai, offering download speeds of up to 10Mbps with 90% coverage of the city’s business districts. It is now identifying locations for WiMAX hotspots in Chennai and is demonstrating the service at an IT conference in the city’s Palace Grounds this week. Aircel plans to invest about USD100 million in launching WiMAX in ten cities. It currently provides mobile cellular services in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, North East and Jammu & Kashmir.
