Telecom Italia has said that ‘convergence remains its strategic goal’, despite announcing a plan last month to separate its fixed line and wireless businesses. At a meeting yesterday the telco’s board hammered out a plan which it says is aimed at providing ‘operational flexibility without renouncing the benefits gained through fixed-mobile integration’. The company has toned down its controversial proposal of spinning off both its wireline and wireless units in order to concentrate on the delivery of media content over fixed broadband connections. Telecom Italia has already begun working with regulators to transform the way it operates its access network. The network, which is being upgraded to a next-generation system, will be run by a separate company.
