Islanet to expand Puerto Rican pre-mobile WiMAX

26 Oct 2006

Wireless internet and data service provider Islanet has revealed plans to expand its Volare pre-mobile 802.16e WiMAX service across Puerto Rico, following a successful launch of the residential service in late August in Mayaguez, an area with a population of around 100,000. Volare was deployed using the Ripwave MX system from Navini Networks, and is so far providing high-speed wireless internet access to over 600 subscribers. Gary Lasher, President and CEO of Islanet, said: ‘We are excited to be on the forefront of the mobile WiMAX market in Puerto Rico. Internet users in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean are ready to upgrade from dial-up to personal broadband as seen from our initial sales. Given the demand, Islanet will expand its Volare coverage on the west coast to surrounding municipalities. Our strategy is to deliver WiMAX to the entire country in 2007.’
