The board of Telecom Italia is meeting today amid speculation that the firm is about to announce a U-turn in its plans to spin off its wireless unit TIM. It is thought that the move will go ahead as announced last month, with the company reorganising its businesses to concentrate on the delivery of media content over fixed broadband connections. AFX quotes an unnamed source within the company who says the new direction will be less ‘radical’ than that already proposed. Telecom Italia’s restructuring plans sparked a controversy which saw the resignation of chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera and also involved prime minister Romano Prodi.
