Econet reports 3G deployment progress

23 Oct 2006

Zimbabwe’s mobile market leader Econet Wireless is confident of switching on its 3G network by February 2007, and says it will expand its subscriber base by around 80% to 800,000 before the end of 2007, according to a company statement. Marketing director Darlington Mandivenga told local journalists that the bulk of Econet’s 3G equipment had already been delivered and was being deployed to various sites. In its first phase, the company aims to roll out around 50,000 W-CDMA connections, with initial network coverage restricted to major cities. If its plans run to schedule, Econet will become the first operator in the country to launch 3G, and Zimbabwe will be only the third country in Africa with the service.
