Vimpelcom set for Chechnyan launch

12 Oct 2006

Vimpelcom has been given the go-ahead by regulators to launch cellular services in the constituent republic of Chechnya. Prime Tass reports that Russia’s second largest mobile operator plans to launch its first services in the region sometime next year. MegaFon is currently the only cellco with networks in Chechnya, where it serves around 300,000 customers. It has experienced problems with Chechnyan rebels destroying network infrastructure, however.
