Retail group Auchan introduces mobile service

12 Oct 2006

French privately-owned retail group Auchan plans to introduce a mobile telecoms service next week and says it plans to become the largest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the country by the end of 2007. According to AFX News, Auchan already sells approximately a million mobile accounts in its hypermarkets and supermarkets across the country for the three mobile network operators; Orange France, SFR and Bouygues Télécom. The retailer now plans to use rented capacity on SFR’s network to sell its own-brand service. Auchan’s decision to launch MVNO operations in France reflects the efforts of Arcep to stimulate competition in the domestic wireless market by forcing the incumbents to open up their networks to new rivals.
