ETC expands and upgrades fixed line services in eastern Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation’s (ETC) said it is investing ETB132 million (USD15 million) to expand and upgrade its fixed line network in 22 rural towns in the states of Oromia, Somali and Harari in the east of the country. The upgrade is part of ETC’s three-year, ETB5.2 billion project to provide telecoms services to 15,000 rural settlements. The project is part of government plans to expand communications services to the 85% of the population living in outlying areas, many of whom have to travel up to 50km to access a telephone.
