Vodafone Spain to launch HSDPA USB modem next week

10 Oct 2006

Vodafone Group will next week launch its W-CDMA/HSDPA PC modem in Spain. The Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Modem connects to computers and laptops via a standard USB cable, making it compatible with Apple computers as well as standard PCs; Vodafone’s standard PCMCIA laptop datacards can only be used with PCs. Vodafone Spain launched commercial HSDPA services on 19 June, offering download speeds of up to 1.4Mbps (with an average of 400kbps to 700kbps) and upload speeds of up to 384kbps. It says in the future HSDPA will enable peak download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. The modem costs EUR169 (USD212) and is available to both pre- and post-paid users. Contract customers can choose between two flat-rate plans, priced at EUR39 per month for 1GB of data, or EUR59 for 5GB; the modem comes free with the latter. Three pre-paid plans will be available, priced at EUR20 (for 25MB of data), EUR40 (200MB) or EUR60 (1GB).
