NTC licenses international gateway operator, approves rural telecoms project

10 Oct 2006

Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has awarded an international internet gateway operating licence to ISP CS Loxinfo. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, CS Loxinfo is the country’s largest dial-up ISP and is partly owned by conglomerate Shin Corp. The new gateway concession is in the ‘type 2’ category for operators with or without their own networks, and follows similar licence awards to Sky Office, a newly founded subsidiary of privately-owned telco True Corp, and Advanced Datanetwork Communication (ADC), a joint venture owned by state-run TOT Corp and mobile market leader AIS (controlled by Shin Corp).

Elsewhere, the NTC approved a plan by TOT and sister telco CAT Telecom to roll out telecoms service in 6,000 villages and 4,000 districts over thirty months, to fulfill obligations under the regulator’s Universal Service Obligation (USO) policy.
