Claro Chile (formerly Smartcom), a subsidiary of América Móvil, has selected Ericsson as the sole supplier of its new GSM/GPRS core network. Under the terms of the deal Ericsson will supply Claro with mobile softswitch and packet core solutions, allowing the cellco to take an important step towards an all-IP network. In a turnkey project which was completed in August, Ericsson also delivered a series of services that facilitated the August launch of the Claro GSM network, including business consultancy, design and initial installation of the network, and core optimisation.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Claro had just over two million subscribers at the end of June 2006, giving it just less than 17% of the market. The company’s aim is to boost its market share to 33% by launching a series of aggressive offers aimed at shedding Smartcom’s youth sector focus in favour of a more comprehensive target audience, including large corporations.
