C&W pondering Indian licence move

6 Oct 2006

UK-based communications group Cable & Wireless (C&W) is considering applying for a telecoms operating licence in India, according to the Economic Times quoting the telco’s CEO for Europe, US and Asia, Jim Marsh. He commented: ‘We are in the middle of working out the requirements for having a licence in India. We are meeting with partners to understand what they’ll offer to us. It’s still fact-finding… but India is the most important geography for telecom.’ C&W’s plans include investing up to USD28 million to roll out services to the corporate market, and it is in talks with Indian operators Bharti, Reliance and VSNL about gaining access to their networks.
