Polkomtel president predicts flat profits and surging subscriber numbers

4 Oct 2006

Jaroslaw Bauc, president of Poland’s third largest cellco by subscribers, Polkomtel, has told a press conference that he expects 2006 net profit at the company to reach a similar level to last year’s figure of PLN1.07 billion (USD331.6 million) despite margin erosion and increased subscriber acquisition costs. According to Bauc, the cellco’s subscriber base is likely to pass twelve million users before the end of this year, having reached 11.14 million in September, up from just over nine million at the end of 2005. The Polkomtel supremo also said that he thinks the cellco will climb to second place in the market, surpassing long-time market leader PTC, which lost the first place position to France Télécom-controlled PTK Centertel in March 2006. Finally, Bauc said that Polkomtel hoped to sign a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) deal with at least one operator by the end of this year, and was negotiating such deals with more than ten operators.
