eircom cuts off Smart customers after billing dispute

Approximately 40-45,000 Smart Telecom customers were left without basic services last night after eircom cut off the troubled operator from its network over a billing dispute. According to The Irish Times, Smart Telecom failed to warn its customers of the impending termination of services before eircom cut off their outgoing calls service from 5pm yesterday, due to an unpaid bill of around EUR4 million (USD5.08 million). The former monopoly says it will continue to provide emergency services and incoming calls until Monday, but the development is more bad news for the troubled alternative telco whose future is looking increasingly precarious. Shares in Smart Telecom have been suspended from trading in the wake of eircom’s decision to pull the plug on customers.
