The Philippines’ telecoms regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission, yesterday reported that typhoon Milenyo damaged more than 1,000 cell sites, and disrupted communication services for millions of mobile phone subscribers in the country, during and after the storm. NTC Commissioner Ronald Solis said that the typhoon, which hit Bicol, Southern Tagalog, Metro Manila and Central Luzon on Thursday, damaged 388 cell sites belonging to Smart Communications, 400 sites of Globe Telecom, and 400 sites of Sun Cellular. In addition, the fixed line network of incumbent Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) was also disrupted by trees and other debris hitting its power and communication lines.
