The Georgian National Communications Commission has announced it will be holding an auction for WiMAX licences in the 3.4GHz and 3.5GHz bands on 1 December. Bidders are expected to include Tblisi-based local wireline operator Akhali Kselebi and second-placed national cellco MagtiCom. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Akhali Kselebi, which goes by the brand name Newnet, had 85,000 subscribers at the end of 2005, while MagtiCom had an estimated 650,000 mobile users, giving it a 45% market share.
