MPT prepares to issue 3G licences

28 Sep 2006

The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) says it will begin laying down regulations for the issue of 3G licences in Vietnam, and to that end has been working with large international telecoms groups to find out their experiences with frequency allocation in preparation for setting the condition of the licences. The MPT says there is a problem with the 3G frequency capacity, which will be enough for four operators only. Two cellcos, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and the military-run Viettel, have already applied to establish 3G networks, and though not officially licensed, VNPT has been trialling the service on its VinaPhone network for the last year.
