Econet launch moves one step closer

25 Sep 2006

A Kenyan court has dismissed an attempt by a shareholder of cellular licensee Econet Wireless Kenya (EWK) to block the firm receiving frequencies which will enable it to launch. The Kenya National Federation of Cooperatives (KNFC) has a minority stake in EWK but has tried to block a launch because it has not been able to meet its own funding obligations and is being excluded by other EWK shareholders. But its attempt failed, with the judge saying its application had ‘no leg to stand on’ according to a report from Nairobi newspaper The Nation. EWK was licensed in 2003 but has been dogged by troubles which have prevented it from launching and joining the existing two players, Safaricom and Celtel which have more than six million subscribers between them.
