Guernsey Airtel, a subsidiary of India’s Bharti Group, has been granted a 2G and 3G mobile licence on the Channel Island of Guernsey, part of the British Isles. Guernsey Airtel has yet to reveal its launch plans. The company will seek expertise and assistance from its sister company Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile service provider in India. In May another Bharti subsidiary, Jersey Telenet, was granted a licence to provide telecom services on Guernsey’s neighbouring Channel Island of Jersey. The company says it will invest over GBP20 million in building its Jersey network, ahead of a planned commercial launch in October. It has contracted Nokia to provide infrastructure and IBM for IT solutions.
