Tonga toys with WiMAX

The Pacific island state of Tonga is to get a WiMAX wireless broadband network. The Kingdom’s national telco, Tonga CC, has ordered 3.5GHz WiMAX equipment from Israeli supplier Alvarion, which it will use to provide broadband internet coverage for the population of around 100,000. Steve Tusler, chief executive of Tonga CC, says WiMAX is the perfect technology to cover the archipelago of 170 islands: ‘Given our island topography and tropical weather, we require a robust system that is easy to scale and works in non line-of-sight conditions.’
