Sistema sticks with CIS

20 Sep 2006

Russian telecoms group Sistema says it will not be making any investments outside of its key CIS markets. Sistema Telecom controls Russia’s largest cellco MTS, which has expanded its operations into CIS countries such as Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. It has in the past been linked with deals in markets including India, Turkey and Egypt, but Prime Tass reports that it is now concentrating on its operations in former Soviet states. Sistema Telecom’s general director Sergei Shchebetov has said that assets in the international telecoms market are currently overpriced.
