Macedonian PM hints at increasing telecoms competition

The Prime Minister of Macedonia, Nikola Gruevski, has announced that the government plans to introduce a third mobile operator, as well as issue a licence to a second fixed line company. In an interview, Gruevski said: ‘Somebody was reluctant to acknowledge the interest in introduction of competition in telecommunications market. Somebody had interest in monopolizing the telecommunications market’. Although the state has unveiled plans to mend the law on electronic communications to ensure increased sector competition, the opposition SDSM party is reportedly against such a move.
