LMT launches HSDPA

13 Sep 2006

Latvia’s incumbent mobile operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) has launched the country’s first High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, its technical partner Nokia said in a statement. Neither LMT nor Nokia has confirmed the availability of HSDPA services, but the initial rollout is thought to have concentrated on the capital Riga. Nokia supplied the HSDPA solution to LMT as part of a frame agreement for the construction of its W-CDMA network, signed in July 2005. Nokia is the sole supplier of LMT’s mobile network infrastructure and the pair combined to make Latvia’s first W-CDMA call in November 2003, before rolling out commercial 3G services in 2005.
