Three or four 3G licences to be auctioned next year

12 Sep 2006

The Russian government is considering awarding three or four 3G mobile licences, with the final decision depending on what frequencies can be freed up in the 2.1GHz band. Prime Tass reports that the State Radio Frequency Commission is due to meet on 23 October to discuss the allocation of 3G spectrum, and the tender or auction for next-generation licences could be held as early as January next year. One firm, SkyLink, is already testing 3G services in the 2.1GHz band using CDMA2000 technology.
