ETC contracts Chinese trio for fixed and mobile expansion

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) has recruited three Chinese equipment vendors to oversee a major network development programme worth USD2.4 billion. ‘The three year 2007-2010 expansion plan aims at increasing the [capacity] of mobile services to seven million from 1.5 million today, and that of fixed telephone network from one million to four million,’ ETC spokesperson Abdurrahman Ahmed told Reuters. In addition, the deal provides for the expansion of Ethiopia’s fibre-optic network to 10,000km, up from the current 4,000km, by 2010. The three companies in charge of the expansion are ZTE Corporation, Huawei Technologies and Chinese International Telecommunication Construction Corporation.
