Vimpelcom wins another court victory over Telenor

8 Sep 2006

Russian cellco Vimpelcom said yesterday that a Russian court rejected Telenor’s appeal seeking to invalidate its expansion plans in Ukraine. The Moscow appeals court rejected the Norwegian company’s appeal against last year’s decision by the chief executive of Vimpelcom, Alexander Izosimov, to buy mobile operator Ukrainian Radio Systems. Oslo-based Telenor and Russia’s Alfa Group, which own 26.6% and 32.9% of Vimpelcom respectively, are locked in a legal battle over the company’s strategy in Ukraine, where both sides already own shares in mobile market leader Kyivstar.
