Toronto Wi-Fi mesh launched

8 Sep 2006

Toronto Hydro yesterday switched on Canada’s largest Wi-Fi zone yesterday in the heart of the city’s financial district, giving downtown laptop users free wireless internet access for the next six months. From 6 March 2007 users will need to subscribe to a pre-paid plan costing USD29 a month, or pay-per-use options including USD10 for 24 hours or USD5 per hour. By the end of the year Hydro plans to cover a six square kilometre access zone, and according to Toronto’s mayor David Miller, it is ‘only a matter of time’ before the service is expanded city-wide.
