State wants partner for Belgacom, papers say

The Belgian government has asked the country’s incumbent telco Belgacom to take advantage of its ‘good debt position’ to look for strategic partners, according to local press reports. The state holds a 50% stake in Belgacom, but there have been persistent rumours of a tie-up between the Belgian operator and Dutch telecom giant KPN, despite merger talks between the two companies failing in 2001.
