Japan mobile market: August update

7 Sep 2006

KDDI has announced that it added a quarter of a million net new subscribers to its mobile phone service in August, taking its total customer base to 24.174 million. Market leader NTT DoCoMo fared less well due to concentrating more on migrating existing users to its 3G service and less on garnering net additions. DoCoMo added 113,000 net new subscribers, giving it a total of 51.977 million. Meanwhile, Vodafone KK, which will officially change its name to Softbank Mobile Corp on 1 October but retain the Vodafone brand name, increased its subscriber base by only 16,000 to 15.284 million.
