State-run Uruguayan telco Antel has purchased four new 155Mbps broadband links to quadruple bandwidth to 620Mbps, reports BNamericas. With two of the links in Argentina and two in Brazil, Antel’s internet subsidiary AntelData hopes to diversify connectivity risks and reduce costs, resulting in a better service for its clients. Uruguay’s broadband market is immature but growing. Antel’s ADSL connections had increased 41% to 70,000 by June 2006 and are expected to reach 100,000 by the year-end. The telco is planning to invest USD10million on expanding its fibre-optic network nationwide.
