Telkom South Africa’s CEO Papi Molotsane has hinted that the firm may introduce WiMAX wireless broadband technology next year. Moneyweb reports that the executive made the comments at a local telecoms conference. Telkom has been testing WiMAX systems for some time and has signed an agreement with chip manufacturer Intel under which they will work together to develop WiMAX services for the South African market. The recently launched second national operator Neotel has already said that WiMAX technology is forming part of its plans, with deployments expected in areas where it has no last mile infrastructure. More information on global WiMAX deployments can be found in TeleGeography’s WiMAX Market Tracking Service.
