29 Aug 2006

German cellcos E-Plus, O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone have reported that their three-month mobile TV trial was a success, and are now forming plans to roll out the service nationwide. The pilot, which concluded last week, was run in Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Munich to coincide with the World Cup football tournament. Approximately 1,000 trial users were given access to TV channels via a DVB-H (digital video broadcasting handheld) platform. According to the operators, participants’ responses have been positive, and they are now petitioning federal and local authorities to grant more frequencies to enable the service to be made available in other parts of the country.
